Breast MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging of the breast has helped physicians diagnose a broad range of conditions, because it can often provide doctors with information about breast health that other imaging technologies cannot.
Breast MRI is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging, but rather a supplemental tool for detecting and staging breast cancer and other breast abnormalities. Breast MRI can offer several advantages:
- Non-invasive
- No radiation exposure
- Diagnose abnormalities that may be hidden by bone when using other imaging methods
- Provide additional information on a diseased breast in order to make treatment decisions
- Detect and stage breast cancer when mammograms and ultrasounds don’t provide enough information
- Determine whether cancer detected by mammography, ultrasound, or after surgical biopsy has spread further in the breast or into the chest wall
- Image dense breast tissue, common in young women
- Image breast tissue in women with breast implants
- Determine the integrity of breast implants
